CELLULO/D
Client : Ville de Lyon,
Fête des lumières (2023)
CELLULO/D is a monumental projection that pays homage to the earliest moments of cinema. This creation revisits the Lumière brothers' films through the prism of artificial intelligence. By summoning the memory of the very first public screening, the work revives the original wonder of the medium, while taking a contemplative (sometimes disturbing) look at the ability of artificial intelligence to reinterpret iconic images. CELLULO/D invites a sensitive reflection on the evocative power of images and the aesthetic, ethical, and cultural issues raised by new technologies.
CONTEXT
For the Festival LA FêTE DES LUMIères, the City of Lyon gave carte blanche to STROBOSCOPE to create a monumental projection on Place des Terreaux, in the heart of the city. A major tourist destination, this iconic site welcomes nearly a million visitors each year during the event. The objective: to offer a work that resonates with the history of Lyon, while echoing the evolution of the Festival of Lights over time.
ARTISTIC DIRECTION
Lyon, the birthplace of cinema, is the city of the famous brothers Louis and Auguste Lumière. It is from this historical anchor that STROBOSCOPE begins its reflection: reconnecting with a founding cultural memory, highlighting a world heritage site, and reactivating it in public spaces. Between past and present, the installation offers a poetic dialogue between two eras: the beginnings of cinema at the turn of the 20th century and our digital age. In collaboration with the Lumière Institute and based on the Lumière brothers’ original catalogue, STROBOSCOPE revisits the first images projected during the very first public screening on 28 December 1895.
Like the spectators of the time, we are invited to rediscover The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station, reinterpreted by STROBOSCOPE using artificial intelligence models, and projected onto the immense facades of Place des Terreaux. The iconic short film is transformed into a western, an animated film, or even a 3D scene. This visual journey, reminiscent of a waking dream, is carried by Rone’s captivating electronic music, which accompanies this journey through a recomposed cinematic landscape.
