ALL IS WELL

Client : Noor Riyadh Festival (2024)

ALL IS WELL is inspired by the iconography of mining shafts. It's no longer a question of extracting a material resource, but of bringing out a symbolic material: light. Here, it springs from the ground like a mysterious flow. Conceived as an autonomous organism, the work unfolds through a rigorously orchestrated audiovisual loop, blending light composition, ambient electronic textures and soundscape. This sensory score plunges viewers into an unforgettable contemplative and immersive experience. The installation lies at the crossroads of industrial realism and fantastical imagination, borrowing its power of fascination from the cinematic experience.

CONTEXT

This carte blanche project, entrusted by curators Jérôme Sans assisted by Julia Fabry, required particular attention to the site's geographical and social context. On the outskirts of Riyadh, the chosen space is an oasis: a lively place, taken over in the evenings by local residents, it thwarts the usual representations of the desert. Already charged with a strong symbolic value for the local population, this site stands out as a landmark, not to be transformed, but reconsidered. Through a play on scale, STROBOSCOPE proposes an installation that helps to renew the way we look at Riyadh, while affirming its roots in a specific culture, imaginary and territory.

ARTISTIC DIRECTION

The starting point for this creation is the imaginary world of industrial infrastructures, in particular that of boreholes, seen as the cathedrals of the industrial age. The metaphor is taken to the extreme: light, extracted from the ground, illuminates the city. Based on a 3D model of an oil well, STROBOSCOPE designed a monumental metal structure equipped with LEDs. An audiovisual loop unfolds over fifteen minutes in three acts. Using Ableton Live, the sound composition acts as a conductor, sculpting the light and orchestrating its variations. The whole is part of a dramaturgy inspired by natural cycles - mineral formation, emergence, transformation, disappearance - simultaneously summoning the temporality of living beings and that of resources extracted by human beings.
